The prankster who allegedly duped Belarus president Alyaksandr Lukashenka into believing he was speaking with the son of Ukraine former president Viktоr Yanukovych in a telephone conversation Saturday, today disavowed any connection to the eavesdropped version of that conversation that appeared on the Ukrainian internet.
"The recording that appeared yesterday (16 June) is not mine. It was made by somebody else," Vovan told our correspondent Alyaksandra Dynko in an interview today.
The Moscow-based phone prankster suggests that Lukashenka take a closer look at his security apparatus if he wants to prevent future eavesdrops.
In the audiotape circulated yesterday, Lukashenka promises the man posing as Yanukovych's son that the former Ukrainian president can seek refuge in Belarus provided he gives 24-notice of such an intention.
AUDIO:
Yankukovych is currently living in Russia.
Belarus is now home to another deposed leader, former Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiev.
The Moscow-based Vovan222, who prefers not reveal his true name, is a 27-year-old lawyer and journalist. He says that he's been "punking" politicans and show biz celebrities since 2007.
Audios of Vovan222's surreptiously recorded telephone conversations with unknowing victims such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Leonid Kravchuk and Vitali Klichko have in the past become viral internet sensations.
